Faculty of Education
Overview
Victoria's Faculty of Education Te Whānau o Ako Pai came into being on 1 January 2005 as a consequence of the merger of Wellington College of Education and Victoria University of Wellington.
Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary teacher education programmes largely take place at the Karori Campus. Other education studies, and postgraduate education qualifications, are based at the Kelburn Campus.
Degrees
The Faculty administers the following undergraduate degrees:
Conjoint Teaching Degrees
BA/BTeach (Early Childhood Education) Conjoint Degree [BA/BTeach ECE]
Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood [BEd (Tchg) EC]
Conjoint Teaching Degree
BA/BTeach, BCA/BTeach, BSc/BTeach
These three conjoint degree programmes combine study in two teaching subjects with teacher education.
The four-year conjoint degree teaching programmes are designed to produce well-educated teachers who can teach to the objectives described by the National Curriculum statements in a primary and/or secondary school. They feature a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and teaching experience in schools. They are taught, at times, on either VUW's Kelburn or Karori campuses.
The BTeach component of each conjoint degree comprises a blend of theoretical study and classroom experience. It has been designed so that you can qualify as a primary or secondary teacher or both. The programme focuses on assisting you to develop your understanding of educational contexts and general pedagogical knowledge, and includes curriculum courses which lead to the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed to implement the National Curriculum. You will also develop specific skills which will enable you to teach confidently.
In the BA or BSc component, you are required to undertake study in a minimum of two teaching subjects. (For the BCA component all major subjects are relevant.) The subject choices you make in this aspect of the programme must be relevant to those taught in primary and secondary schools. Study in one subject must be taken to at least 200-level and the other subject must be the degree major.
BA/BTeach ECE (Early Childhood Education) Conjoint Degree
This 4-year conjoint programme gives students the opportunity to become a skilled early childhood teacher at the same time as students pursue a BA.
This degree is most appropriate if you are seeking a degree level early childhood teaching qualification, and are not currently employed in an early childhood centre. If you are already employed in an early childhood centre, the 3-year BEd (Tchg) EC may be the more appropriate course of study.
Students of the The BA/BTeach (ECE) degree will spend blocks of time at both the Kelburn and Karori campuses. Your first year will mostly be at the Karori campus.
To do this degree you must enrol at Victoria University and be selected for teacher education through an Assessment Centre.
This degree is expected to give access to higher salary structures.
Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood [BEd (Tchg) EC]
This 3-year degree is available to students who are already working in New Zealand early childhood centres and wish to gain a degree in early childhood teaching or upgrade from an existing Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching. This programme is not available to international or pre-service students.
Students who are not already working in an early childhood centre have access to the 4-year conjoint BA/BTeach (ECE).
Courses in the BEd (Tchg) EC programme are taught at both Karori and Kelburn campuses in the following three strands:
Education Studies (EDUC courses)
Curriculum Studies and Cultural Studies (CUST courses) and
Teaching and Professional Studies (TEAP courses)
TEAP and CUST courses are taught primarily by School of Early Childhood Teacher Education staff and EDUC courses are taught primarily by staff from The School of Education Studies. During any one trimester students have classes at only one campus
